Divorces Have Decreased Under The Affordable Care Act (Obama Care)

The Affordable Care Act aka Obama Care may have helped America’s divorce rate.

That’s according to a new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before the ACA, couples would divorce to protect their assets from medical debt.

To qualify for medicaid, finances have to fall below a maximum asset level. Couples only had two options. They could divorce and save their retirement money or stay married and they would never recover financially. Under the ACA, the maximum asset level was eliminated.

Economists compared states that rejected and accepted Obama Care. In the latter, states saw a 5.6% decrease in divorce for couples between 50 and 64.

Will divorce rates return if Trump repeals the Affordable Care Act?
